Islander News Articles 4/8
Will add in more articles and fill in blanks Wednesday:
Scheduled blogs:
Stay or go (good timing) 2009-10 New York Islanders.
Announcement on plans for NYIFC, Bridgeport playoffs and WJC with final date ever still 4/17.
Newsday: Greg Logan recaps the Islanders 9-0 loss against Carolina Tuesday night which he reports is the worst in franchise history with a few pregame comments from Doug Weight at this time.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
I looked through some 72-73 games with some 9-1 games or 9-2 games, Islanders had a loss in Calgary 11-4 in 1981 when they dominated the NHL. I know Brad Shaw his first week had a 8-1 loss against Vancouver at home and I will never forget the 8-1 loss
at home to Winnipeg in 1988 that ended the Terry Simpson era.
I guess this game is the worst disparity loss in club history.
Newsday: Mr Logan in the Islanders Newsday blog had a very late entry on the loss where he did not feel it was as bad as the 9-2 game and make it a point to bring up injuries all season (including Blake Comeau’s) but also correctly pointed out there is no excuse for a team being outplayed, outshot to the degree they were in that game.
Also included (among several other items) are Yann Danis comments on the goals he allowed and a late lottery update with Colorado’s shootout loss.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Mr Logan did an excellent job in this update. He absolutely made a great point on the goaltending and was very generous including about this teams overwhelming injuries and their very competitive record in a game they did get back two key players and still were terrible in every area.
I do have to ask once again where have all these kinds of updates been from him in Newsday’s blog all season win or lose after games that Mr Zipay does after almost every game for his beat?
I do not think this is asking an unfair question on my part once again.
Newsday: Eden Laikin reports The Long Island Association Tuesday used a full-page ad in Newsday to announce its support for the $3.7-billion Lighthouse Project that would surround a renovated Nassau Coliseum with 150 acres of shops, condos, eateries and offices.
The ad was signed by LIA president Matthew Crosson. A spokeswoman said he was unavailable to comment. The LIA did not pay for the ad, which appeared courtesy of a barter agreement between the Islanders and Newsday, according to a source familiar with the deal. Newsday would not confirm the barter arrangement or say how much such an ad would cost.
Neither Lighthouse nor Islanders officials returned calls.
Also reported LIA’s chief economist Pearl Kamer was paid by the Lighthouse Group to study the potential economic impact of the project: revenue, job growth and numbers of school-aged children. Kamer said Tuesday there’s no conflict between her role as a Lighthouse consultant and a part-time LIA employee.
Town officials said they stopped the recent Petition mailing when questions were raised about whether the Lighthouse project qualifies for stimulus money or whether the request is too late but one supporter of it is Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), according to a letter he wrote to Gov. David A. Paterson’s office last month.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Wonder if that barter agreement included Newsday ads on the teams website and throught hockey games? Kind of funny Newsday would not confirm something it’s own reporter asked them about for a story?
Makes me kind of happy this blog is heading for syndication not doing any more of these kinds of updates.
NewsObserver.com: Chip Alexander’s article on the Canes dominating is already up.
The News: Adam Richardson in the Pictou local Newspaper selected Islanders goaltender and local product Joey MacDonald for his player of the year award.
The Republican: Gary Brown has comments from former Islander draft pick Ryan O’Marra on his struggles in the AHL as he had a few words on his time with the Islanders.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio in the Sound Tigers blog examines the ramifications of losing Blake Comeau for Bridgeport and again reviews the clear-day rules for playoff roster in terms of who can be added and when.
Islander News Articles 3/28
Will update early Saturday so we have as many quotes as possible from both sides.
Newsday: Greg Logan’s game recap has goaltender Joey MacDonald’s comments on his first career shutout against his former team in his game recap.
NHL.com: Brian Hunter has comments from Joey MacDonald on his first shutout who credited his team as he talked about his diving save in the second period. Head coaches Scott Gordon and Mike Babcock also discusses the game with Wings defender Nicklas Lidstrom agreeing with MacDonald the momentum swung with the two goals and the big saves.
NHL.com: Larry Wigge does a feature on Bill Guerin comparing his circumstances here vs Pittsburgh and uses Scott Gordon’s rotten apples comment to make his point with the Long Island label slapped on virtually everything despite the head coach’s praise for Bill Guerin.
Kyle Okposo in this NHL feature that has several subjects but leads with Guerin also has Kyle Okposo’s comments about adding a franchise talent or finishing this season strong.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
If Larry Wigge who is a long-time respected writer cannot do the homework or only goes for Newsday blurbs where even Greg Logan speculated he was not talking about Bill Guerin how is anyone else going to get these stories right?
Scott Gordon was on XM radio and praised Guerin earlier this week, that did not make it in this article at all.
Canadian Press: Has Bruno Gervais and Josh Bailey’s comments in their recap along with MacDonald.
Detroit News: Ted Kulfan has the recap of New York’s 2-0 win in Detroit.
Michigan Live: Ansar Khan also has a game recap.
Detroit Free Press: Also has Red Wings coverage on their loss.
Journal-Star: Kevin Capie reports Islanders scout Ken Morrow was one of at least five NHL teams scouting the Peoria Rivermen against the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio previews Saturday’s big game in Hershey with head coach Jack Capuano and defenseman Andrew MacDonald’s comments.
Bergenheim, MacDonald out, Mannino recalled
Newsday: Greg Logan in the Islanders Newsday blog among several items reports Sean Bergenheim was returned to New York to be re-evaluated and goaltender Joey MacDonald will likely be joining him on the injured list with a knee injury suffered in the Toronto game. Peter Mannino has been recalled while Richard Park and Nate Thompson are on the road trip and again took part in the full practice and could be activated.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio reports despite this being clear day in the AHL (roster of those eligible for playoffs) the Sound Tigers have made no trades and none of the pro-tryout players were converted to full AHL contracts so they could be placed on the list. Robin Figren was assigned to Bridgeport by the Islanders is not eligible for the playoffs but can play in games down the stretch or just work out with the team.
At this time the beatwriter was not given the list that will include some current Islanders like Kyle Okposo which team President Howard Saffan commented on recently.
Islander News Articles 2/17
Newsday: Greg Logan’s article has comments from head coach Scott Gordon and goaltender Joey MacDonald.
Newsday: Mr Logan’s second article is has Jeff Tambellini’s comments along with Frans Nielsen while noting the Islanders struggles in the faceoff circle Monday afternoon.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Tambellini seems like a very nice young man but let’s not pull punches, we heard the same thing a year ago. He was doing better but Scott Gordon decided to sit him for Andy Hilbert/Mitch Fritz which is a terrible sign for a team in last place.
Newsday: Mark Herrmann’s article partly is about Pens interim coach Dan Bylsma but mostly tries to compare the Penguins rebuild with the Islanders.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Throwaway article and worthless beyond Bylsma content. Pittsburgh won a league-wide lottery for Crosby (not by finishing last) and tried to buy half the league a few years ago in a move that looked very much like how Tampa built their team this summer when it fell apart in mid-season with Palffy, and LeClair on their last NHL legs.
There is no comparing this to an organization with 368 man games lost to injury that made four of six playoffs and were in contention last year.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Dave Molinary’s post game coverage and blog here.
Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Tricia Lafferty’s game coverage of the Pens shootout loss.
NY Post: Dan Martin’s coverage is almost all on goaltender Rick DiPietro.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Let’s recap, the last few Friday-Saturdays/offdays the Post has two articles on the Islanders, game day we see one article that barely touches on the game. Not Dan Martin’s doing but where is the common sense in this decision making?
Daily News: Peter Botte has goaltender Rick DiPietro’s comments on his recovery and the last two years of injuries in a lengthy interview that takes up almost the entire game summary. Scott Gordon had a few words on Jeff Tambellini’s shootout goal.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
I wanted something different but Mr Botte’s editor (same as Post) should have provided space for a second article combined with a full game story. Anyway important to post DiPietro’s quotes.
Here was DiPietro’s comments on being back at full strength next season:
“I don’t see any way that I’m not, I’m not giving a definitive answer either way. I don’t know what’s going to happen. But so far, so good.
“I’ve seen quite a few doctors who are pretty positive about the future. That’s the whole point of this season is to make sure I’m 100% and ready to fulfill my contract.”
On his recent injuries:
“It’s been terrible. In the summer when I got my knee cleaned up, I never thought it would cause such a problem. To look back and miss pretty much an entire season, it’s brutal, Worst thing in the world you can do is sit in a rehab center and try to get healthy. Mentally, I can’t take much more of this. It’s just been a tough two years for everybody. I’ve never seen so many injuries, but there’s nothing you can do.”
NY Times: Dave Caldwell was sent to the Nassau Coliseum to cover Dan Bylsma’s first game as interim head coach, former Islander Miroslav Satan who played here during his time as Steve Stirling’s assistant coach also comments.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Nothing like that NY Times strategy of sending writers to local hockey games to cover the visiting team but not the home teams.
Espn/several sources: Pierre LeBrun has analysis on Atlanta trading former Islander Mathieu Schneider back to Montreal for a conditional draft pick Monday.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio has the Sound Tigers weekly which include comments from Jason Pitton on his season ending shoulder surgery. Also included is clear day for the AHL has been moved back to Wednesday, March 11, a week after NHL trade deadline as opposed to the usual day or two.
Will put additional news articles in later or tomorrow in this blog entry.
Bridgeport plays Tuesday again against Norfolk here along with Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Islander News Articles 2/12
Newsday: Greg Logan’s captain obvious article plays the what if game on Parise-Islanders while Joey MacDonald talks about his career high game in saves, head coach Scott Gordon discusses the Devils and Kyle Okposo goal.
Newsday: Mr Logan’s other article had injury updates and the following statement from Islanders spokesman Seth Sylvan on the offer by Queens officials:
“We are very flattered with the interest expressed in the Islanders by various Queens elected officials and business leaders, However, our current focus is to work diligently with the Town of Hempstead to obtain approvals for the Lighthouse Project.”
Newsday: Mr Logan also had a short blog entry on Queens during the game.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Given some of these folks could have known Mr Wang from his Queens college days it may have been something that was put out there as a future option or a little push at Nassau County but again a move to Queens would mean no Lighthouse which has to be the priority for Mr Wang-Rechler because this is not just Charles Wang’s project.
It does mean there is a market for this team locally if Charles Wang decides to move it there himself or sell it. I would think with Queens involved a buyer would surface without that Smg lease in a new facility.
New York officials have no problem adding the Islanders and that’s the good news.
NY Post: Mark Everson’s Devil-centric coverage was all the Post provided.
Newark Star Ledger: Rich Chere had Devils centric coverage and blog entries on the game.
Daily News: Kristie Ackert’s Devils coverage had eight short paragraphs on the game with a few on the Islanders-Queens.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
I fail to understand why the sportsticker articles the Daily News has for games with ap has far more space but not the written articles.
NY Times took the night off from coverage in Newark and Msg going all AP.
AHL.com: Recaps Bridgports 4-3 comeback overtime win against San Antonio Wednesday on Mike Iggulden’s goal.
1. SA MacLean, (16) (Nikulin, Spina), 2:33
1. BRI McLean, (12) , 15:04 (SH)
2. SA Keefe, (2) (Perry), 15:47
3. SA Porter, (6) (Smith), 3:57
3. BRI Fraser, (5) (Packard, Morency), 12:07
3. BRI Colliton, (5) (Wotton, Iggulden), 12:15
OT. BRI Iggulden, (20) (Walter, Smith), 4:11 (PP)
Dallas prospect goaltender Stephen Tobias stopped nineteen shots, Al Montoya backed up for San Antonio.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio’s game coverage has comments from Jeremy Colliton and head coach Jack Capuano. Blog coverage has Jamie Fraser’s comments on the struggling powerplay here.
San Antonio Express News: Tony Uminski coverage of the Rampage.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
See ya at the Calder Cup finals.
Islander Notables
Newsday: Greg Logan reports the Islanders passed on selecting Edmonton goaltender Dany Sabourin on waivers, reports an NHL source says MacDonald is progressing faster than expected and Danis has a .929 save percentage since he has gotten a chance to play on a regular basis.
Point Blank: Mr Botta among several subjects reports the Islanders will likely keep the same lineup tonight with McLean, Hillen, Mannino and has a few words on Joey MacDonald.
USA Today: Kevin Allen in his blog reports on the goaltending situation for team USA next year at the Olympics and that DiPietro’s absence this year gives Team USA officials only about an eight week window next season to decide if he can play.
Dubielewicz signed, MacDonald out 2-4 weeks, DiPietro update later
Newsday: Greg Logan in the Islanders Newsday blog reports according to an NHL source the Islanders have reached an agreement with former goaltender Wade Dubielewicz on a pro-rated contract for the rest of the season of a $500,000 annual salary. A few words on some past background on Scott Gordon-Dubie are included.
Also reported goaltender Joey MacDonald is out two-four weeks according to Islanders head coach Scott Gordon with what the beatwriter calls the high end of that time frame expected.
Mr Logan also reports the club has indicated plans to provide an update later today on the condition of Rick DiPietro but speculates Dubie’s signing could mean DiPietro’s season may be over.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Horrible news on MacDonald who was fantastic for this club and hid a lot of flaws early with some outstanding play. I have no idea what to expect from Wade Dubielewicz but I suspect he will battle with Yann Danis and not be handed the starters role.
I’m not sure what to expect on DiPietro at this point. MacDonald’s injury regardless with about nine weeks left after the break it’s most likely all sides want to look out for DiPietro’s future.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio in his Sound Tigers blog reports on how Peter Mannino was given the news of his recall on the ice and despite Mr Logan-Botta both reporting it head coach Jack Capuano could not confirm this for the beatwriter who had a few words on injuries/illness for some players at today’s practice.
Islander News Articles 12/30
Newsday: Arthur Staple’s Ranger centric article includes head coach Scott Gordon’s comments his club did not do well in a lot of areas and waited until the last minute to get pucks. Trent Hunter discussed his sore back that prevented him from returning after getting the wind knocked out of him.
Newsday: Mr Logan has comments from head coach Scott Gordon on Rick DiPietro’s injury, the decision to play him against the Toronto and goaltender Joey MacDonald’s comments on what this means for him as he talked about his communication with the teams number one goaltender.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
The coach defended the decision to play him and said if he had three weeks of practice the same thing could have happened who described it as a training camp injury. Mr Logan for his part questioned why he played while the coach talked about the doctors giving him clearance.
Scott Gordon goes by what the doctors tell him and so does the player. If it’s a temporary thing or not DiPietro has to work his way back.
And the beat goes on.
Newsday: Mr Logan in the Islanders Newsday blog had a late entry on the status of Trent Hunter with his comments. He did not blame the Rangers Ryan Callahan for what happened and aside from being sore apparently had the wind knocked out of him.
Newsday: Mark Herrmann did his Ranger centric dance and spike article after Scott Gomez admitted it’s always a big game against the Islanders, Mr Herrmann decided to describe at length why the Islanders beating the Rangers, who he described as a team with a big-city payroll and fancy reputation, is always is a nice step for the Islanders?
Mr Herrmann then writes this leaves the Rangers as the only hope that hockey season can be relevant in New York with the Jets eliminated and projects the Islanders as a club chasing the top overall pick.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Mr Herrmann, big city payrolls and fancy reputations do not describe the Rangers who for all their health and urgency tonight earned a win but hardly looked great giving up four goals to a club that has been injured all season.
If not for some bounces and a poor goal by MacDonald the Islanders likely are the club that get the two points.
The Yankees have a big fancy reputation and a big city payroll, so do the Mets, Giants, Jets and Knicks.
Not the New York hockey teams.
Good news is Mr Herrmann did not do his Islanders are moving article #…. I guess he is saving the next one for January 13th.
NY Post: Dan Martin writes it was a wreckless move to play DiPietro so soon despite the coaches comments that he he practiced for two weeks. Game content was less than a paragraph with nothing on Comeau or Okposo.
Scott Gordon also said it was nothing major.
NY Post: Larry Brooks Ranger centric article only had room for a DiPietro cheap shot calling him hockey’s American Idle.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Funny we never saw Mr Brooks pull that on Mike Richter despite all the injuries and rushed attempts to return at the end of his career. As for Dan Martin there was a game for the Islanders to be written about, this is why the Post needs the writer to do an Islander blog.
Why do they bother sending Mr Martin to practices with the club on the road to interview DiPietro? This is not very fair coverage in return.
Daily News: Peter Botte looked like he wrote his article before the game where he took his shot at DiPietro referring to him as Carl Pavano and pointing out his contract as Scott Gordon again defended the decision to start him.
No game content at all with the full Ranger centric article here providing nothing for Islander fans.
Journal News had Sam Weinman’s Ranger centric blog and coverage here.
Last time the Islanders played in the city the AP covered the game only for the Times here and it appears to have happened again.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Don’t fret folks, we can read updates from games all over Europe.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
With the Islanders hitting the road we may not see much of Dan Martin and especially Peter Botte when they return on 1/13. The Daily news tends to drift away as baseball comes closer and Giant coverage picks up.
NHL.com: Adam Kimmelman in his Atlantic Divison recaps has more on Rick DiPietro with Scott Gordon’s comments.
NHL.com: Chuck Gormley compares Islander Prospect Jyri Niemi with former Islander Bryan Berard while NHL director of central scouting E.J McGuire talks about the offensive flair to his game and that he’s entertaining to watch in a recap of Eastern Conference prospects at the WJC.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio has the Sound Tigers weekly which includes some questions for Tyler Haskins and some hard work from Jeremy Colliton after rejoining the Sound Tigers with the upcoming schedule.
Islander News Articles 12/21
Newsday: Greg Logan recaps the Islanders 1-0 loss to Nashville. Head coach Scott Gordon’s comments about the injury to Doug Weight along with his clubs play while goaltender Joey MacDonald credited his defense and Joe Callahan who was called up.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Scott Gordon did not talk long in the ITV postgame but he said a lot about the club on offense in terms of getting to the net.
Not a lot of speed.
Not physically imposing.
Do not get the puck to the net when they do get there.
Do not have the personnel that are going to bury chances.
He did credit his club and discussed the injuries also.
Point Blank: Mr Botta for his part did not think those comments were the right thing to say out loud in a league where the fans pay to see the games and where you never want your players to give up.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
At least we heard the word ” We ” a lot which our fans did not get last year from Ted Nolan which Mr Botta brought to everyone’s attention.
Nashville City Paper: Matt Wilson recaps the Predators 1-0 win against the Islanders on Saturday.
Nashville Tennessean: Is the Predators primary paper.
Tampa Tribune: Erik Erlendsson had more than a few animated comments from Martin St.Louis after Tampa dropped it’s fifteenth one goal game of the season with head coach Rick Tocchet also talking about his players.
Tampa remained 30th in the NHL for those wondering.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
I posted this because the question is how long before we start seeing some of this from the Islander veterans or Scott Gordon?
Atlanta visits Tuesday.
Updated:
Late Sunday Morning Mr Logan had an entry in the Islanders Newsday blog
here where Andy Sutton talks about his injury and the team having to play with so many players and credited the coaching staff for working so hard to teach the players. Joe Callahan talked about his opportunity and praised his roommate from camp (Sutton) while Bill Guerin acknowledged it’s time to give the kids more opportunities even if they are in a tough spot.
Mr Logan is trying to find out more on Doug Weight for later today or tomorrow’s article but sometimes it takes a few days.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Sutton went out of his way to praise the staff, good stuff from him and Callahan. I wanted more from Guerin who understands prospects have it tough but also must be very disappointed with where this season has gone and what it will likely mean.
Nice job by Mr Logan getting us more on a Sunday after a lot of travel for him.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio recaps Bridgeport’s 4-1 loss to the Binghampton Senators with former Sound Tiger Drew Fata scoring twice. Jeff Tambellini, who had Bridgeport’s only goal and head coach Jack Capuano comment on the loss.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
Tambellini talked like a man not sure if he will be coming back. He either returns or has to clear waivers to stay with Bridgeport. With Weight’s injury the roster spot is there for him to come back but they may need to recall a center also.
Ct Post: Mr Fornabaio also previews Sunday’s game against Lowell at 4pm.
Ct Post: Mr Fornabaio also blogged on the loss.
Press Connects: Michael Sharp covers the B-Sens.
Islander News Articles 12/18
Newsday: Greg Logan has comments from Mike Comrie who wants to return to the lineup Friday in Minnesota while head coach Scott Gordon is not too sure there is a roster spot available and praised the play of Ben Walter who he felt fit in well.
Mr Logan also reported Kyle Okposo took part in practice and Jeff Tambellini’s conditioning stint ends Saturday.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
The roster speculation game has gotten more than stale, we should know when the club leaves who got on the plane.
I agree with the Islanders coach Walter did fit against Washington and played well for the minutes he saw, very visible who got some chances.
NY Times: Dave Caldwell apparently showed up for Tuesday’s Islander game to play the state of the attendance card and get fan reaction pitting this years struggling club vs those of the late nineties and asked why does Mr Wang not spend more on the payroll?
Also included were comments from general manager Garth Snow he never saw what he was doing as a youth movement but he is committed to getting the younger players on the ice with significant playing time along with a few words on Rick DiPietro’s return.
Rest of the article were repeat quotes from the Washington Postgame from Bill Guerin, Doug Weight.
NYI Fan Central Comments:
I guess it was the Times turn to show up and take a few kicks at the club after not giving them a story since I think as far back as Brandon Sugden? I’m not sure Mr Caldwell understands you cannot put young players in the lineup and spend to the cap. Does he understand Okposo makes rookie cap money, Nielsen got a four year deal, Bailey could have been sent back to save money?
They spent a lot of money on Mark Streit and all we read was he is overpaid when he signed? They locked up Brendan Witt, Trent Hunter and every defender on the roster to multi-year extensions. Only Doug Weight and the club knows where the incentives in his contract will take his salary.
Mr Wang could have spent a lot less long-term money, that’s what Mr Caldwell should have looked at with the contracts Marcinko, Figren, Tambellini were given.
That’s all revenue that could have been saved for the Lighthouse.
Given the Islanders lease no owner can spend to the cap unless it’s a multi-billion dollar company willing to take such hits as many corporate clubs do. Funny how many reporters immediately estimate attendance vs what is announced at Islander games, we do not see that practice at the Garden for games despite the empty seats.
Mr Caldwell said his comments from the gm were from Tuesday.
Shoddy work.
For Garth Snow’s part when Park-Hilbert are on the powerplay and Bergenheim/Comeau are watching (with Comeau on left and right wing) that does not reflect what you said.
Daily News: Elliot Olshansky’s prospect article is on both Islander prospects at Clarkson, Tyrell Mason and Shea Guthrie as both talk about the struggles of the team this year.
Ryan Jankowski, the Islanders’ assistant GM and director of amateur scouting talks about both young players.
NHL.com: Chuck Gormley had a feature on goaltender Joey McDonald.
THN.com: Adam Proteu cannot tell us anything about the Islanders beyond DiPietro’s injury or the age of the Coliseum but as usual it does not stop him from his latest assault which is supposed to be a sidebar to the Oilers 9-2 loss.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio’s article is on the all the defenders in Bridgeport and the competition for spots with head coach Jack Capuano’s comments on the depth and the current injuries.
